What is a Refurbished 746?
Our telephones are all iconic original 1970's and 1980's retro/vintage 746 telephones that we have lovingly "refurbished", serviced and converted ready for modern day use.
By "Refurbishment", we mean that we have replaced the original damaged 746 telephone cases and cords with brand new replacements made in the UK to the original BT/GPO specification. For example, the 746 phone cases are made in the UK using the original BT/GPO moulding (rescued at the time the BT factories closed). This means that we can give these classic British telephones a new lease of life. Due to the fact that we service them and recalibrate them, we believe they will be good for many more years to come.
These rotary dial telephones were originally manufactured to very exacting standards using excellent quality robust materials, this made them relatively expensive to produce. However, BT never sold these 746 telephones and they were rented out to "telephone subscribers". When people moved house these phones were returned to BT and they refurbished them (very similar to what we do) before re-issuing them to the next subscriber. This is why these land line phones were designed to last for many many years.
All the original vintage telephone insides (main chassis, mechanical bells and rotary dial) are cleaned, serviced and recalibrated on our ex GPO/BT test equipment and the 746 telephones reassembled and thoroughly tested in our vintage telephone workshop before putting them on our website for sale.
Please note, as with all Pulse Dial (aka Rotary Dial) telephones, there are no * or # buttons/keys. Neither do these old phones contain a redial function. Please see our "746 Phones Questions" page for more details.
