About Abdy Retro Telephones

Abdy Retro

As a small family run business, we have used all of our knowledge and skills gained from restoring vintage British telephones (over many years) to work out the most sympathetic method to refurbish and service these vintage 746 telephones. Our chief engineer worked for BT for over 32 years and has 5 years of technical City & Guilds Telecommunications qualifications.

Why Refurbish 746 Telephones?

We believe it's very important to keep these model 746 Telephones in circulation. They were designed in the late 1960's and manufactured through the 1970's and 1980's. They were the "Last" of the proper "work forever" telephones. By that, we mean that unlike more modern telephones these 746 telephones were designed and built to "last and last".

As well as using robust tried and tested high-quality materials they were designed to be simple to repair if they ever developed a fault, which was a rare occurrence due to the build quality and design.

Our Workshop

We renovate these 746 phones in our own vintage telephone workshop. See the picture below of our purpose built GPO phone workshop.

Serviced & tested 746 Telephones

All these 746 Dial telephones are carefully stripped down, cleaned reassembled and calibrated on dedicated BT/GPO test equipment.

The 746 telephones electrical component design has never been beaten. These telephones are regarded as the pinnacle in the evolution of the telephone. This is particularly true in terms of the mechanical telephone bells. Bells in modern replica 746's are a poor imitation of the originals. The only Achilles heel of the original 746 telephone design was the use of carbon granule microphones, inside the mouthpiece, so we replace these with modern electret microphones to improve the sound quality and reliability.
